Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This pair of Victorian cast silver salt and pepper cellars takes the avian form of small birds with detailed feathering. Modelled in the style of sedgelings by maker Berthold Muller, the matching pieces are finished in a polished silver colour with realistic cast detailing, feathered engraving, and pierced shaker holes across the top of each head. The figural shakers stand on small cast claw feet with textured talon details and distinct facial features. Each cellar measures 7 cm high, 4.5 cm wide, and 5.5 cm deep. They suit placement as a dining table centrepiece in an English Country House interior setting, used during meals to hold and dispense salt and pepper.

FAQs

Novelty condiments are silver salt cellars, pepper pots, and mustard pots crafted into figurative forms such as birds, animals, or characters, popularised during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

These items are typically constructed from cast or spun sterling silver or silver-gilt, featuring chased or engraved surface decoration to achieve detailed texture.

Authentic pieces carry British import hallmarks alongside maker or distributor marks for Berthold Muller, often accompanying German Hanau pseudo-hallmarks or purity marks stamped onto the underside or base edges.

Place silver condiments at individual table settings or alongside a central dining arrangement to incorporate sculptural interest into formal table settings.

Clean gently with a soft cotton cloth and specialized silver polish, avoiding abrasive materials that can strip away fine chased details or natural oxidisation in carved crevices.
