This seventeenth-century silver trefid spoon originates from Southampton and dates to approximately 1680, produced in the Restoration style. The piece is formed of sterling silver with a bright reflective finish and measures 20 cms in length. The design incorporates an oval bowl joined to a flattened stem with a rat-tail underneath, and a notched three-lobed terminal engraved by hand with the period owners' initials IC over SC alongside the date 1697. Additional marks include the maker's stamp located in the bowl and the barbed rose struck twice on the stem, accompanied by visible rubbing to the hallmarks from age. Today, provincial tableware of this type finds a home displayed upon a sideboard top within an English country house interior, serving as a collector's item or a decorative piece of antique silver. The spoon rests against a soft white textured cloth background that highlights its reflective polished metallic surface. The handle end curves upwards slightly into its distinct trefid shape, while the narrow stem tapers smoothly towards the oval bowl.

A trefid spoon is a style of flatware introduced across Western Europe and Britain during the mid-to-late seventeenth century, recognised by a flat stem terminating in a three-lobed notched handle.

These spoons were typically hand-hammered and forged from sterling silver, often featuring hand-engraved initials or motifs and a supportive raised ridge, known as a rat-tail, on the back of the oval bowl.

Authentic pieces exhibit period hallmarking, evidence of hand-forging rather than machine casting, characteristic wear patterns along the rim of the bowl, and classic notched terminal shaping.

An antique silver spoon can be displayed inside a wall-mounted shadow box, arranged on a velvet-lined cabinet display tray, or layered into a tabletop collection of early metalwork.

Preserve early silver by wiping gently with a soft microfibre cloth or specialized silver polishing cloth, avoiding abrasive polishes or chemical dips that can erode delicate engravings and natural age patina.
