Imari porcelain is a type of Japanese export porcelain produced in the town of Arita, in the former Hizen Province, and shipped from the port of Imari. It gained prominence during the Edo period in the 17th century, initially for the domestic market and later for export to Europe.

Imari ware is crafted from high-fired kaolin clay, glazed, and traditionally decorated using a distinct palette comprising underglaze cobalt blue and overglaze iron red, complemented by gilt details and other enamel colours.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit hand-painted motifs, slight iron-foot blemishes where the clay was unglazed in the kiln, pooling in the glaze, and natural wear consistent with age, alongside stylistic characteristics specific to the Edo or Meiji periods.

An Imari plate can be displayed as a focal point mounted on a wall, placed on a sideboard using a plate stand, or incorporated into a gallery wall to introduce rich colour, historical texture, and pattern to a room.

Antique porcelain should be washed by hand in lukewarm water using mild, non-abrasive soap when necessary, avoiding dishwashers, harsh chemicals, and prolonged exposure to direct sunlight to protect the overglaze enamels and gilding.
