This late 19th-century French Louis XVI Revival bookcase is made from rich brown mahogany with gilt brass mounts and clear glass. The moulded cornice has an ornate central lyre cresting, and the front has two large arched glazed doors that enclose four adjustable wooden shelves and two short internal drawers. The uprights are flanked by fluted pilasters with brass capitals, and the piece stands on tapering turned brass-capped feet. Three notable visual details are the warm reddish-brown timber tones, the intricate brass lyre ornament at the top, and the turned column feet at the base. The large cabinet measures 259 cm high by 54 cm wide and 21.5 cm deep, and it separates into five sections. It provides substantial display and storage space in a formal living room, study, or library, where it holds books and decorative objects behind glass protection.

French Louis XVI Revival bookcases are characterised by neoclassical symmetry, fine timber construction, fluted side pilasters, and decorative gilt-metal mounts depicting classical motifs such as lyres or floral garlands.

These cabinets are typically constructed using primary hardwoods like mahogany or rosewood, fitted with glass door panels, timber shelving, and hand-finished gilt brass or bronze mounts.

Authentic pieces feature traditional cabinetmaking techniques including hand-cut dovetail joints, threaded fixing bolts on the bronze mounts, and hand-moulded glass panels exhibiting minor surface variations.

Position the piece as an architectural focal point, styling lower shelves with bound volumes and upper shelves with curated porcelain, sculptural ceramics, or art objects to maintain balance.

Dust surfaces regularly with a soft cloth, apply high-grade wax polish sparingly to the timber, and avoid chemical polishes on the gilt mounts to prevent stripping the protective historic patina.
