Why does my chest smell like smoke?

Many early chests sat in main living spaces heated by open hearths. The timber absorbed smoke from peat or wood fires over generations. Washing the interior with a mild soap solution helps. The scent rarely leaves the wood.

I have been looking at a painted dowry chest from Europe and wonder why the paint is only on the front and sides, leaving the top bare?

The flat tops of these pieces took heavy daily use as tables or seating. Paint applied to the lid wore away quickly under tools and heavy objects. Decorators focused their efforts on the front panels where the imagery remained visible. You'll often find the original bare wood on top, smoothed by years of handling.

What are the tiny holes underneath?

Flight holes from woodworm are common on older pine furniture. Beetles laid eggs in the timber, and the emerging adults chewed their way out. Most historic flight holes are dormant.

My family gave me a heavy wooden dowry chest with rusty iron hinges, and I want to know the best way to clean them without damaging the surrounding timber?

Light surface rust often provides a protective layer on antique ironwork. You don't need to strip it back to bright metal. Rub the hinges gently with a dry cloth to remove loose flakes. Apply a thin coat of microcrystalline wax to seal the metal and prevent further corrosion. Keep wet cleaners away from the iron. Moisture will bleed into the surrounding wood and cause dark stains.
