19th century
For Sale by Abacus Antiques
Description

A lovely antique Gerobog chest. We date this chest to the second half of the 19th century.

The chest has an attractive base with four large wooden wheels with shapely carved panels to the front and rear.

The chest comprises a large rear hinged lidded box with large metal handles on either side of the chest. There is a small storage area at the top left hand side. The chest has attractive pierced metal corner brackets to each corner and is fitted with a lock (key supplied).

The chest has a height of 29" (74cm), a width of 47.5" (121cm) and a depth of 20.5" (52cm).

This lovely chest remains in a good usable condition with surface markings commensurate with age and usage. There is some wear, indentations and marks throughout from past use.

This remains a very stylish and functional chest which would function well as a toy storage box or a linen chest etc. It will continue to provide good service for many years to come.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Victorian Indonesian Colonial marriage chest is made from warm brown teak with iron latch hardware, brass corner mounts, and solid wooden wheels. It features a rectangular rear-hinged lidded box with side metal handles, a shaped carved plinth base, and surface markings, wear, indentations, and marks from past use. The piece measures 74 cm high, 121 cm wide, and 52 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this large storage trunk functions well as a toy storage box or a linen chest in a bedroom, living room, hallway, or boot room. It provides practical everyday utility while adding rustic farmhouse character to an interior scheme, serving as a striking focal point with historical charm.

FAQs

A gerobog is a traditional Indonesian storage chest, historically presented during wedding ceremonies to hold dowries, household linens, and valuable personal possessions.

These chests are predominantly constructed from dense hardwoods such as teak, featuring hand-forged iron or brass latch fastenings and heavy wooden wheels for transport.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-carved joinery, original ironwork or brass corner plates, signs of natural timber oxidisation, and hand-shaped solid wooden wheels.

A rustic marriage chest functions effectively as a coffee table in a central living area, a blanket storage unit at the foot of a bed, or a functional entry hallway piece.

Clean the timber regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a clear beeswax polish periodically to maintain wood hydration and protect original surfaces.
