FAQs

Old Sheffield plate is an early form of silver plating produced by fusing a layer of silver to a copper core, a technique invented in the 18th century before electroplating became common.

These items were traditionally crafted from a fused composite of sterling silver and copper, often featuring cast silver or copper handles and decorative feet.

Authenticity is typically verified by examining edges and worn spots where the reddish copper core shows through the silver layer, alongside the absence of standard electroplate hallmarks.

They make striking centrepieces on dining tables, sideboards, or kitchen islands, adding a reflective metallic texture that complements both traditional and modern schemes.

Care requires gentle cleaning with non-abrasive silver polish and a soft cloth to protect the thin exterior silver layer from wearing away over time.
