A Fine Pair Of Mahogany Pedestal Bedside Chests With Brushing Slides

This fine pair of 19th Century mahogany pedestal chests once stood on either side of a mirror, as they originally formed part of a pedestal dressing table from the 1840s. We discovered them in an unrestored state, and at that stage they were deeper, too deep for the purpose we had in mind. Still, we could see their potential as a pair of impressive bedside cabinets or display pedestals - in fact, they are the best-looking pair from this period we have acquired and subsequently converted. Many hours are spent in their conversion before they can be traditionally restored and French polished - reducing their depth so their dimensions are aesthetically pleasing takes skill and patience, as we have to recut the dovetails to the back of each drawer. Their brushing slides still retain the original bottle green leather inserts with hand-tooled gilded decoration to their edges. Each draw has its original lock (key supplied), turned wooden knobs and supporting castors beneath their rounded plint...
