Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian glazed mahogany bookcases typically feature a two-part design, comprising a glass-fronted upper section for book display over a solid wooden base with drawers or cupboard doors. They are recognised by rich wood grain, arched window moulding, and sturdy classical proportions.

These cabinets were constructed using solid mahogany or softwood frameworks faced with cut flame mahogany veneers. Hand-cut dovetail joints, brass hinges, hand-blown glass panes, and traditional shellac French polishing were standard trade techniques of the era.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-finished details such as irregular glass panes, hand-planed backboards, dovetailed drawer linings, and natural oxidisation on the timber and hardware. Original locks, keys, and adjustable timber shelf supports are also key indicators.

Position the piece against a neutral wall to allow the dark timber to stand out, or pair it with contemporary upholstery and minimalist lighting to balance its visual weight. The glazed upper section can hold framed art alongside curated book collections.

Keep the cabinet away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent timber warping and veneer lifting. Dust regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth and apply a beeswax polish annually to protect the original finish.
