This large Victorian gentleman's library bookcase dates from 1880 and takes the form of a four-door inverted breakfront cabinet constructed from burr walnut and walnut with glass panels and brass hardware. The exterior displays a warm brown tone with pronounced burr walnut veneer figuring, a moulded cornice along the top, and a solid plinth base at the ground. Four glazed doors open to reveal fully adjustable interior shelves, showing normal marks and scuffs commensurate with age and use while remaining in good sound condition. Practical proportions measure 114 cm high, 212 cm wide, and 50 cm deep, providing ample storage capacity for books and display items. Placed in a study, home office, or living room, the piece functions effectively as a central storage unit while adding traditional character and substantial presence to the interior space.

FAQs

Victorian burr walnut glazed bookcases feature figurative wood grain cut from walnut tree growths, enclosed glass doors, and solid plinth bases typical of mid-to-late 19th-century English cabinetry.

These pieces typically feature burr walnut veneers laid over solid timber frameworks, hand-carved mouldings, brass key escutcheons, and original glass pane doors.

Authentic 19th-century examples display hand-cut dovetail joints, original brass locks, age-appropriate wear inside the cabinet frames, and natural timber shrinkage lines along the veneered surfaces.

Positioned against a neutral wall, this piece serves as a focal storage unit for curated ceramics, hardcover books, or glassware in modern dining rooms, living spaces, or home offices.

Keep the timber out of direct sunlight to prevent bleaching, maintain stable humidity levels to avoid veneer lifting, and apply beeswax polish periodically along the wood grain.
