An 18th-century pot cupboard, also known as a commode or night table, was designed to house a chamber pot inside the enclosed cabinet space. Over time, these versatile pieces transitioned into functional bedside cabinets for storing personal items.

Authentic pieces from this era were predominantly constructed using dense hardwoods such as mahogany or oak, featuring traditional hand-cut dovetail joints in the drawers, brass hardware, and pegged mortise and tenon joinery.

Identification relies on examining timber patination, hand-wrought iron or brass fixings, signs of age-related wear such as minor shrinkage cracks, and traditional hand-cut joinery methods characteristic of pre-industrial cabinet making.

This piece works effectively as a compact bedside table in a master bedroom or as a functional accent cabinet in a living space, adding historical character and warmth through its rich timber grain.

Maintain the wood by dusting with a dry microfibre cloth, applying occasional natural beeswax to nourish the grain, and placing the item away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber splitting.
