Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Pricket sticks are tall candle holders equipped with a vertical metal spike, or pricket, at the top rather than a sunken socket. This spike pierces the base of a large wax candle to hold it securely in place, a format traditionally utilised in ecclesiastical settings such as church altars.

18th-century pricket sticks were typically hand-carved from solid wood, such as pine or lime, coated with a gesso ground, and finished with water or oil gilding. The iron pricket spike was forged separately and driven directly into the top of the carved wooden column.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-carved joinery marks, natural shrinkage cracks in the timber along the grain, and uneven wear to the gilded finish revealing red or grey clay bole beneath. The metal prickets typically show hand-forged iron marks and historical oxidisation.

These decorative objects work well as dramatic focal points when placed symmetrically on a large sideboard, fireplace mantel, or console table. Their height and sculptural gilded forms complement both traditional classical schemes and contemporary minimalist backdrops.

Dust gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush, taking care around fragile leaf gilding. Avoid using liquid cleansers, water, or chemical polishes, as moisture can dissolve the underlying water-soluble gesso ground and damage the original gold leaf.
