1880-1900 a Tall Bronze Candle Holder

19th century
Description

Circa 1890-1900 An unusual, heavy, tall, painted bronze candle holder, weighing 4.9kgs.

It was probably made to be floor standing, or to hold a candle in a large room or Church. It is in good condition and the paintwork has been designed to highlight the shape and details throughout.

It is a rich dark colour as seen in photos 3 and 6, with the soft cream highlighting the details.

The candleholder measures 59cm in height, the triangular base is approximately 18.5cm and it takes 5cm in diameter candles.

On each of the three sides of the base is an image possibly mythological, or religious, and the legs appear to be bird shaped supported by claw and ball feet.

Delivery within the UK mainland is included in the price and for outside areas or abroad, please contact us for a quote.

This Victorian tall bronze candle holder dates from the period 1880 to 1900. The piece is made of cast bronze with a dark bronze finish and soft cream paint highlights, standing on a tripod base with claw feet and bird-shaped legs. A wide, flanged sconce sits atop a heavily moulded and turned shaft featuring a spiral twist section, decorative turned knops, and mythological or religious relief images on the three-sided base. Measuring 59 cm high, 19 cm wide, and 19 cm deep, the heavy item weighs 4.9 kg and accommodates a candle of 5 cm in diameter. In a modern home, this substantial piece sits well upon a sideboard top in a dining room, hallway, or living room, where it provides a functional candle holder and a decorative focal point. The dark bronze surface absorbs ambient light while the painted highlights accentuate the intricate mouldings, turned elements, and sculptural relief work. Its sturdy tripod construction ensures stable placement on flat surfaces, adding period character to traditional or eclectic interiors.

Late 19th-century candlesticks often drew inspiration from Gothic Revival and Neo-Renaissance styles, incorporating cast metalwork, elaborate stems, and tripod bases. These pieces were designed for both religious altars and grand domestic interiors.

Most examples were cast in heavy bronze or brass using sand-casting or lost-wax techniques, followed by hand-chasing to refine decorative details. The metal was then patinated or lacquered to achieve a deep, dark tone.

Authentic pieces from the period typically feature substantial weight, hand-finished seams, and natural oxidisation in recessed areas. Look for threaded construction along the central rod, turned knops, and cast detailing consistent with Victorian metalworking methods.

Place a singular tall candlestick on a sideboard or mantelpiece as a focal statement piece alongside modern artwork or ceramics. Pair it with dark taper candles to accentuate its historic proportions and architectural profile.

Dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth and avoid abrasive metal polishes that strip away original patination. Wax deposits can be loosened gently using warm water or a soft wooden tool.
