Miniature Chest of Drawers/jewellery Box

19th century
Description

A truly exceptional example of an English 19th-century miniature chest of drawers in mahogany. The layout consists of two short drawers over three full-width drawers on a plinth base, and with a rounded-edged overhanging top. All of the finely dovetailed drawers retain their original turned knob handles, and the backing boards are also original. In over thirty years of trading this is the finest example we've seen; perfect proportions and with an original finish and a glowing patina. There is a working key to the top full-width drawer. This highly decorative chest would make an ideal trinket/jewellery box. It is Victorian, and it dates from c.1880s.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Miniature chests of drawers were historically produced during the 18th and 19th centuries as cabinetmakers apprentice pieces, salesman samples, or specialized jewellery caskets. These scaled-down pieces demonstrated a craftspersons skill in executing full-sized joinery techniques on a small scale.

These items typically feature fine hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, or rosewood, often paired with hand-cut dovetail joints, brass escutcheon plates, and turned wooden knobs. High-quality examples incorporate flame mahogany veneers laid over solid oak or pine carcases.

Authentic pieces display evidence of historical hand tool usage, such as hand-sawn dovetails, slotted brass screws, and naturally worn drawer runners. Timber shrinkage along the grain and age-appropriate wear around handles and keyholes also indicate period origin.

Place the miniature chest atop a sideboard, desk, or dressing table to serve as functional organisation for jewellery, stationery, or small accoutrements. It functions simultaneously as a compact storage unit and an architectural tabletop display.

Dust regularly using a dry microfibre cloth and apply a thin layer of natural beeswax polish annually to protect the wood grain. Keep the item situated away from direct sunlight and radiators to avoid drying out the timber or lifting the veneer.
