Elizabethan Welsh Oak Six-plank Chest, Circa 1560

Description

Good Elizabethan chest or coffer in native Welsh oak, the lid with a moulded edge fixed with original wrought iron hinges to the box made from single planks, the front with knotched sides and the ends with V-shaped feet. There has never been a lockplate, which is unusual.

In original untouched condition wth a wonderful colour and surface patination.

A six-plank chest, also known as a boarded coffer, is an early form of timber furniture constructed from six solid wooden boards fastened together. Popular from the medieval era through the 17th century, these trunks provided essential storage for linens, clothing, and household valuables.

16th-century coffers were constructed using thick hand-riven oak planks joined with wrought iron nails or wooden dowels, rather than framed panels. The end boards frequently extended downwards with V-cut or arch-shaped cutouts to create integral supporting feet.
