Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Keep the item away from direct sunlight and central heating sources to prevent veneer lifting or timber shrinkage. Clean the wooden surfaces periodically using a soft cotton cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish along the grain.

Position the unit against a neutral wall in a library, hallway, or formal living space to balance its visual mass. Curate the interior shelves with a combination of bound volumes, ceramics, and structural objects to create visual contrast.

Authentic 19th-century pieces display hand-sawing marks, hand-cut dovetail joints on drawers, and original glass panes showing subtle imperfections. The presence of secondary timber such as pine or oak inside the internal frame structure is also characteristic.

Cabinetmakers during this era favoured rich flame mahogany veneers, solid oak or pine drawer linings, and hand-cut dovetail joinery. Accent details often featured carved foliate motifs, arch-top glazed doors, and turned wood handles.

A William IV secretaire bookcase originates from the 1830s, bridging Regency and early Victorian design. It typically combines a upper glazed cabinet for books with a pull-out or fall-front secretaire drawer fitted with small interior drawers and pigeonholes for writing.
