This nineteenth century walnut dressing table stool follows the early eighteenth century Queen Anne Revival style. The warm brown wooden frame has cabriole legs decorated with carved shell knees and pad feet, paired with a padded stuffover seat upholstered in cream linen with a brass studded border trim. Measuring 49 cm high, 60 cm wide, and 43 cm deep, the piece works well at the foot of the bed or in a dressing room as a convenient seat or footrest. The robust and solid timber displays a rich patina and good colour, while the recently recovered linen cushion provides clean, tidy upholstery. This practical antique fits naturally into bedrooms, dressing rooms, or guest suites alongside traditional wooden furniture.

These stools were crafted during the 19th century, often incorporating earlier Queen Anne or Georgian revival design elements such as cabriole legs and shell carvings. Designed as low seating for vanity tables, they feature padded tops for functional use during daily grooming.

Cabinetmakers typically used solid walnut timber with traditional joinery, including mortise and tenon joints. The upholstered tops were traditionally built using natural webbing, horsehair or wool padding, and secured to the frame with brass upholstery tacks.

Authentic pieces display subtle hand-carving irregularities, genuine timber patination, and age-related oxidation on the underside frame. Look for traditional joinery marks, hand-shaped leg silhouettes, and period-correct leg profiles like cabriole legs terminating in pad feet.

Position the stool at the foot of a bed, beneath a hall console table, or alongside a contemporary dressing table. Upholstering the top in a neutral linen or textured fabric allows the rich walnut tone to integrate with modern colour schemes.

Clean the polished walnut legs with a dry lint-free cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish twice yearly to preserve the finish. Gently vacuum the fabric seat with a soft brush attachment, keeping the piece away from radiators and direct sunlight to avoid timber movement.
