Unusual Japanese Satsuma Triple Gourd Vase By Meizan

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Steve Sly Japanese Works of Art

As part of our Japanese works of art collection we are delighted to offer this unusual shaped Meiji period 1868-1912 Satsuma vase by the highly regarded artist Meizan , one of three Satsuma artists known to use this name and often confused or attributed to early Yabu Meizan works , my view is that this is a different slightly earlier period artist working circa 1890 , he has finely painted a very complex to pot triple gourd shaped vase in painstaking detail , the lower section painted with the well known Boys day procession , the middle section shows a display of Birds amidst native Flora and the smaller upper section is decorated as a mountainous landscape , each section divided with intricate geometric and floral borders , the gilt rim decorated with black and gold dot border , interestingly a pattern adopted by Yabu Meizan later in the Meiji period , artist signed to the underside , a great addition to your Japanese works of art or Satsuma collection .
