These two stacked travel trunks date from the Victorian military period and measure 56 cm high, 107 cm wide, and 53 cm deep. Fabricated from pine and camphor wood with an iron and dark charcoal paint finish, the trunks possess hinged lids, black surfaces with white stencilled lettering, iron corner brackets, iron strapping, and remnant white paper labels. The visible lettering includes text for Thicknesse, Depot, XIIIth Light Infantry, and England. One trunk displays a keyhole escutcheon near the top edge, vertical wooden battens on the front face, and minor scratches and scuffs across the dark surfaces. Placed in a home study, library, or hallway, these storage chests function as side tables, coffee table bases, or blanket boxes while offering practical interior storage.

Military travel trunks were constructed to transport officer belongings, uniforms, and equipment during campaigns and overseas postings. They were frequently painted with dark protective finishes and stencilled with regimental details, officer names, and home depots for identification during transport.

These chests were typically crafted from solid woods such as pine, oak, or teak, held together with dovetail or butt joints. Iron corner brackets, metal straps, and heavy drop handles were added to reinforce the structure against heavy wear during transit.

Authentic pieces exhibit original hand-stencilled or painted lettering referencing specific regiments or locations, natural patination on the wood, and signs of age on iron hardware such as mild oxidisation. Construction details like hand-cut joinery and period lock plates also indicate authenticity.

A single trunk or a stacked pair can serve as a distinctive coffee table, a foot-of-bed storage chest, or a side table in living rooms or studies. Their industrial texture and dark painted wood contrast well against light modern walls and upholstered furniture.

Maintain painted trunks by dusting regularly with a soft, dry cloth and keeping them away from direct heat sources or high humidity to prevent wood movement and paint flaking. A clear, neutral beeswax paste can be applied sparingly to unpainted wood areas to preserve the finish without altering original stencilling.
