This Victorian Staffordshire earthenware spill vase dates to 1860 and takes the form of two children reclining beneath a central leaf-shaped vase spout. The ceramic figure displays hand-painted polychrome enamel decoration in shades of orange, cobalt blue, yellow and green against a white glazed ground, accented with shredded clay foliage and painted musical notes on the base. A small bird perches atop each side of the moulded rest behind the figures, while the flared tulip-shaped spout rises from the centre. Wear is visible on the upper rim of the tulip, and a slight chip is present on the base. Measuring 16 cm high, 15 cm wide and 7 cm deep, the object sits easily on a mantelpiece, bookshelf or side table in an English Country House interior. It serves as a decorative display piece or functional spill holder for holding matches or tapers near a fireplace.

A Staffordshire spill vase is a 19th-century English earthenware object featuring a hollow cylindrical section designed to hold spills, which were rolled paper or thin wood splints used to transfer fire from a hearth to candles or pipes.

These pieces were press-moulded in sections using white earthenware clay, assembled, fired, glazed with a lead glaze, and subsequently hand-painted using overglaze enamel colours and gold leaf accents.

Authentic 19th-century pieces typically feature flat, unglazed backs, small release holes from moulding, soft wear to overglaze enamels, crazing in the lead glaze, and an absence of modern maker marks.

Place the item alongside contemporary ceramics on a modern mantelpiece, curated bookshelf, or console table to provide visual contrast through traditional folk art forms.

Dust gently with a soft dry brush; avoid submerging the item in water or using abrasive chemical cleaners, as overglaze enamels and gilding can rub off easily.
