Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian travelling boxes and trunks were constructed to transport personal belongings, tools, or linens during voyages and railway travel. Crafted primarily from sturdy woods such as pine, they featured reinforced frames and painted finishes to withstand transit.

These utility trunks were typically constructed from solid pine timber, joined using dovetail joints for structural strength. Exterior surfaces were coated with dark protective paint or varnish and fitted with iron or brass escutcheons and nameplates.

Authentic period examples feature hand-cut dovetail joinery, iron keyhole escutcheons, and historic paint finishes showing natural surface wear down to the bare timber. Brass or metal identification plaques mounted on the lid are also common features.

A dark painted trunk can be repurposed as a functional coffee table, positioned at the foot of a bed for storage, or placed in an entryway. The black finish creates a strong dark visual anchor when contrasted against neutral walls.

Maintain the surface by dusting gently with a clean, dry microfibre cloth to prevent lifting dry paint. Avoid liquid detergents or chemical cleaners, and apply a thin layer of clear natural beeswax occasionally to protect the exposed timber.
