FAQs

Edwardian desk lamps, produced between 1901 and 1910, are characterized by a transition from heavy Victorian ornamentation to lighter, more functional forms. They frequently feature cast brass fittings, adjustable mechanism joints, and decorative blown glass shades.

Lighting from this era commonly utilized solid cast brass or copper for bases and stems, paired with hand-blown art glass shades. Cranberry glass, achieved by adding gold chloride to molten glass during production, was a popular choice for decorative shades.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit natural surface patination, heavy cast metal bases for stability, original turn-key switches or swivel joints, and period-appropriate threaded or thumbscrew shade holders.

An Edwardian desk lamp can be styled on a contemporary wooden writing desk, a dark sideboard, or a library shelf. The warm metallic tones and soft light output provide a focal point that balances sleek contemporary furnishings.

Dust the brass and glass gently with a soft dry cloth, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners that may strip historic patination. Original electrical wiring should be inspected and restored by a qualified electrician to meet modern safety standards.
