Dealers Notes

Our stock includes early oak and walnut furniture from the 18th century, as well as more formal pieces from the Georgian period. Clocks, barometers and globes are complemented by Colonial cabinets, furniture and early arms. Their scientific instruments, which include early microscopes, telescopes and equipment such as sextants, provide a fascinating insight into the evolution of technology, whilst demonstrating fine artistry and craftsmanship. One of Hansord’s many exhibitions was entitled ‘From simplicity to complexity with a little eccentricity’ and this continues to be the guiding mantra behind their collection today.

This rare Irish Georgian 18th century bureau cabinet on stand measures 240 cm high, 100 cm wide and 56 cm deep. Made from dark brown mahogany with brass hardware, the piece presents flame mahogany veneers to the upper cabinet doors, the fall front, and the drawers. The upper section has a swan-neck pediment above two panelled doors, set with brass keyhole escutcheons and candle slides holding brass candlesticks. Finely carved mouldings frame the doors and body, surmounting a slant-front writing slope fitted with a central brass escutcheon. The lower section comprises a configuration of drawers with brass drop-pull handles and keyhole escutcheons. The cabinet stands upon well-carved cabriole legs terminating in ball and claw feet. Designed in the style of an 18th century gentleman's library bureau, the cabinet provides a functional writing desk paired with enclosed upper shelving for storage. It suits placement as a principal workspace or focal storage piece in a traditional study, library or drawing room.

Irish Georgian furniture from the 18th century is recognised for its robust proportions, deeply carved architectural details, and prominent motifs such as scallop shells, mask carvings, and cabriole legs ending in paw or webbed feet. Craftspeople in Dublin and Cork adapted English pattern books using dense, high-quality imported mahogany.

These pieces were primarily constructed from solid and veneered West Indian mahogany, valued for its rich grain and durability. Secondary timbers like pine or oak were used for drawer linings, while brass was employed for handles, escutcheons, and hinge hardware.

Authentic period pieces show hand-cut dovetail joints, oak or pine secondary woods with natural shrinkage, original hand-cast brass hardware, and irregularities in construction consistent with hand tools. Flame mahogany veneers and genuine period lock mechanisms further indicate authenticity.

Keep the wood away from direct sunlight and modern heat sources to avoid drying or bleaching the timber. Clean surfaces gently with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to maintain the natural patina and lustre.

A large period bureau cabinet serves as a striking anchor piece in modern study spaces or formal living rooms. Pairing dark mahogany with neutral wall tones, understated lighting, and contemporary textiles balances its visual weight while highlighting its architectural silhouette.
