This eighteenth-century country style dough bin takes the form of a rectangular trough basin constructed in solid oak with a dark brown timber finish. The design incorporates a planked hinged lid, pegged timber joints, and straight corner posts supporting the body. Visible surface details include a very good historic patina across the wood, along with minor signs of treated historic worm. The piece measures 65 cm high, 168 cm wide, and 65 cm deep overall. In a modern interior, this practical rustic farmhouse storage item works well as a blanket chest at the foot of a bed, a decorative storage box in a hallway, or an occasional coffee table in a living room. The sturdy construction provides a flat surface for display while concealing everyday items within the deep interior cavity, making it a functional addition to traditional and contemporary spaces alike.

Historically used in bakeries and country kitchens during the 18th century, a dough bin was a utility trough designed for mixing and proving bread before doubling as household storage.

These pieces were typically crafted from solid English oak utilising mortise and tenon joinery, iron fasteners, and hand-planed timber planks.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-sawn timber marks, peg construction, natural wood shrinkage around joints, and an uneven, deeply oxidised patina.

Positioned in a hallway or living space, an antique coffer provides functional storage while adding warm wood tones and historical texture to contemporary schemes.

Preserve the original finish by dusting regularly with a soft cloth and applying beeswax occasionally, avoiding direct heat sources and high humidity.
