Pocket-sized silver boxes were originally created in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries to hold finely powdered tobacco known as snuff, becoming status symbols among European nobility.

Craftsmen constructed these boxes using sterling or continental grade silver, frequently decorating them with repousse relief work, chasing, engraving, and hand-fitted flush hinges.

Authentic pieces feature genuine makers marks, city assay stamps, or purity hallmarks struck into the metal alongside tight, hand-finished hinges and detailed hand-carved ornamentation.

Remove surface dust with a soft cotton cloth and apply a specialist non-abrasive silver polish occasionally, avoiding aggressive chemicals that strip natural oxidisation in recessed details.
