19th century
For Sale by Puckerings
Description

A stunning and most handsome scent or cologne bottle, perfect for either a lady or gentleman.

The bottle is made from a thick piece of crystal, deeply cut, most tactile. The screw top is made from sterling silver, partly gilded creating a gold and silver two-tone finish.

The top has a full hallmark for London 1881 together with the highly sought-after Queen Victoria's head duty mark. The makers initials are also present, I think for the silversmith, Frederick Purnell.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the late 19th century, scent bottles were essential personal items used on vanity tables or carried in purses. Silver-topped cut glass bottles became widespread during the Victorian era as manufacturing techniques allowed for precise crystal cutting paired with hallmarked sterling silver caps.

These containers typically feature heavy lead crystal or cut glass bodies designed to refract light, topped with mounts crafted from sterling silver, silver gilt, or gold. Internal stoppers were often made of glass to create an airtight seal for perfumed liquids.

Authentic British pieces bear official assay hallmarks on the silver mount, including a makers mark, town mark, purity mark (such as the lion passant for sterling silver), and a date letter. The glass usually exhibits precise hand-cut geometric patterns and natural wear on the base.

Small antique scent bottles serve as accent pieces when arranged on silver vanity trays, bathroom countertops, or bedroom dressing tables. Placing them near light sources highlights the refractive properties of the cut glass.

Clean the exterior glass gently using mild soapy water and a soft cloth, taking care not to submerge silver mounts. Polishing silver requires a dry silver cloth to remove oxidisation without letting harsh chemical polishes seep into glass crevices.
