Steve Sly Japanese Works of Art has dated this piece to the 1880s.
The vase body is formed from a tusk section inlaid in fine shibayama detail depicting flowers ,birds and butterflies and is signed in a tablet to one side , the tusk section is then housed within superb silver and enamel mounts to form the vase , the lid is surmounted by a bird finial and lifts off to reveal the inner liner which when removed reveals the hollow vase section , the silver side handles are formed as dragons or mythical beasts, all standing on a lobed silver enamelled foot which is further signed beneath in a gilt tablet.
