This Victorian fruit or bread basket dates from 1890 and is fashioned from sterling silver with a reflective metallic finish. The oval vessel features an ornate, scalloped rim and elaborate pierced scrollwork across its deep walls, accompanied by chased floral repoussé motifs and patterned side panels. It rests on a polished, smooth base that contrasts with the detailed fretwork of the open-work body. The bowl measures 29 cm long by 20 cm wide and stands on a dark wooden surface. In a modern interior, this piece functions effectively as a dining table centrepiece or a decorative display dish for fruit and bread in a traditional dining room or kitchen.

Late Victorian silver baskets from the late nineteenth century frequently feature intricate pierced fretwork, cast scroll motifs, and repousse detailing. Designed primarily for formal dining, these hollowware pieces served as functional display vessels for fruit, bread, or confectionery.

These vessels were crafted from sterling silver, comprising 92.5% pure silver alloyed with copper for structural durability. silversmiths utilised hand-piercing techniques, chasing, and repousse hammering to create ornate openwork designs.

Authentic British sterling silver features a complete set of hallmarks stamped into the metal. Look for the lion passant duty mark indicating sterling purity, an assay office mark (such as a leopards head for London or anchor for Birmingham), a date letter, and a makers mark.

Position the basket as a central accent on a dining table, sideboard top, or kitchen island. It can function as a decorative table centrepiece or hold dried botanical elements, bridging classic craftsmanship with modern minimalist interiors.

Clean the surface using a soft cotton cloth and specialized silver polish designed to remove oxidisation without abrading the metal. Avoid harsh chemical dips or dishwasher use, and store the piece in a dry location wrapped in anti-tarnish cloth.
