This nineteenth-century Victorian breakfront bookcase is formed from oak with warm brown tones, pollard oak crossbanding and glazed doors. The piece exhibits an ornate carved pediment, fielded panel doors, brass handles, decorative mouldings and turned supports. Books populate the internal shelving behind the four upper glass panes, whilst the lower cabinet section provides enclosed storage. Measuring 305 cm long by 66 cm deep by 287 cm high, this substantial item commands a significant footprint within a room. Suitable for placement in a gentleman's library, study or principal reception room, the bookcase provides extensive display and storage capacity for volumes and decorative objects. The warm timber grain and traditional joinery suit period and eclectic interiors alike, offering both functional utility and classic nineteenth-century character to domestic spaces.

FAQs

A 19th-century carved oak breakfront bookcase is a substantial storage piece where the central section projects forward from the side wings, incorporating glazed upper doors and carved panelled cupboards below.

These bookcases were predominantly built from solid oak or oak veneers, fitted with glass panelling, adjustable wooden shelves, and brass door fittings or locks.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail joinery, hand-carved decorative crestings and pilasters, subtle imperfections in the original glass, and historic wear along shelf edges.

Position the piece as an architectural anchor on a main wall, balancing bound volumes with modern ceramics, framed prints, and curated art objects to lighten the visual weight.

Maintain the timber by dusting with a lint-free cloth and applying beeswax annually, whilst keeping the cabinet away from direct heat sources to prevent timber shrinkage.
