Rare Antique Sterling Silver Boxed 5 Piece Sheffield 1906 Hallmarked Complete Tea and Coffee Service in the Original Fitted Case, Made by Very Collectable Maker Harry Atkin.

1900 - 1920
Description

Fine quality Sheffield 1906 hallmarked English very unusual oval shaped antique tea and coffee solid silver service by Harry Atkin, famous and very collectable maker, contained in the original fitted storage and travel case. It includes both a silver coffee pot and a silver teapot with ebony handles and ebony and silver finials, a silver sugar bowl and milk jug with gilt lined interiors, all with matching hallmarks, and silver sugar tongs. The sugar tongs are of the proper style and size for the service, but are Georgian, hallmarked London 1797. The case is wood with leather covering, and a cobalt blue velvet and satin interior, with a hidden push button catch. The vase shaped half fluted style of this service is very classic and will go with any period. They have reeded edges, and the coffee pot stands on a stepped footed base. The fluted lids of the two pots have ebony vase shaped finials, that echo the shaped ebony handles.

Size-coffee pot is 11 inches high by 9.75 inches wide (end of spout to end of handle). Milk jug is 4 7/8 inches wide by 4 inches high. Sugar bowl is 6.75 inches wide by 4 inches high. Teapot is 10.25 inches wide by 6.75 inches high. Tongs are 5.5 inches long. Case overall size is 21.75 inches wide by 14.5 inches deep by 5.5 inches high.

Weight-silver only-a very generous 1560 grams or over 50 troy ounces.

Weight with case for shipping-11 lbs. 3 oz.

It is a rare service with all major pieces hallmarked exactly the same (excepting the sugar tongs, London 1797) and fitted into the original fitted protective case. The case

was meant for storage and travel, and has protected it very well for nearly 120 years. This service is beautifully made, an excellent gauge and weight of silver, and in hardly used condition.

A lovely and complete service for coffee and tea, complete with its own storage container. It would make a treasured gift or a present for yourself.

Such cased silver services are very scarcely found.

This item will ship from the USA to most destinations throughout the world.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Produced during the reign of King Edward VII, Edwardian silver tea services often feature classical revival motifs, such as lower body fluting or gadrooning, combining refined proportions with traditional silversmithing techniques.

These sets were constructed from solid sterling silver with a purity of 925 parts per thousand, frequently incorporating ebonised wood insulators on handles and finials to insulate against heat.

Authentic British silver bears official assay hallmarks, including the crown mark for Sheffield, the lion passant indicating sterling purity, an alphabetical date letter, and a registered makers mark.

An antique silver tea set can be arranged on a dining room sideboard, drinks trolley, or serving tray to introduce reflective metallic contrast into contemporary dining and living spaces.

Silver pieces should be maintained by polishing gently with a specialised silver cream and a microfibre cloth, avoiding abrasive chemicals, and storing within a dry, tarnish-resistant fitted case or cloth pouch.
