This Georgian lead glass wine glass from c1760 combines clear transparency with white enamel details across its structure. The form includes a flared bell bowl featuring a solid base with two rows of air beads, an opaque twist stem with spiral tapes and a central lace corkscrew, and a conical foot with a rough pontil. Hand-blown manufacturing characteristics include a slightly irregular foot profile. Practical dimensions measure 17.6 cm in height, with a rim diameter of 7.3 cm and a foot diameter of 7.9 cm. Ideal for display on a sideboard top within an English country house interior, this wine glass provides a functional period accessory for modern home settings.

Opaque twist glassware emerged in England during the mid-18th century, primarily between 1750 and 1780, following taxes on glass by weight. Artisans embedded opaque white enamel canes into the glass stem, which were then drawn out and twisted to create decorative internal spirals.

These vessels were crafted from heavy lead crystal glass. The stems were constructed by placing white enamel rods into a cylindrical mould, encasing them in molten clear glass, and stretching and rotating the gather while hot to form spiral patterns.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit a snap pontil mark or smoothed pontil area under the foot, minor irregularities in the handmade spiral pattern, natural foot-rim wear, and the distinct weight and resonance of 18th-century lead glass.

Historic stemware is often displayed inside illuminated glass cabinets, arranged on polished timber sideboards, or integrated into curated bar carts to highlight the intricate detail of the stems.

Antique lead glass should be washed individually by hand in lukewarm water using a mild non-abrasive detergent. Dishwashers and extreme temperature changes must be avoided to prevent thermal shock and clouding.
