This French Louis XVI style ceiling light dates from the early 20th century. The piece is constructed from gilded brass and glass in a gold colour, incorporating a single circular convex glass panel, scroll arms, candle sleeves, and a suspension chain. A decorative scrolling framework with reeded banding, reeded side sections, and an acorn central finial surrounds three light fittings with circular bobeche drip pans, supported by a square gauge scrolling canopy along with the original chain and ceiling rose. The item measures 56 cm high by 28 cm wide by 28 cm deep. The lantern is suitable for illuminating a hallway, entrance hall, or stairway in a home.

French hall lanterns traditionally feature cylindrical or polygonal frames made of cast or chased metal, enclosed with glass panels to shield candles or bulbs from draughts. Style elements often include scrollwork arms, leaf motifs, and central multi-light candle clusters typical of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century design.

Authentic period lanterns were primarily crafted using cast brass, bronze, or iron with gilded, lacquered, or patinated finishes. The glazing consists of hand-blown or moulded curved glass panels designed to fit the specific framework.

Authentic pieces often exhibit signs of historical hand-crafting, such as irregular glass thickness, hand-cut screws, cast metal seam lines, and natural surface oxidisation within recessed areas. Original gilded surfaces typically show subtle wear where handled over time.

A hall lantern works as a central focal point in an entryway, stairwell, or hallway, suspended above eye level. Pairing the metallic tones of gilt brass with neutral wall palettes or classic panelling creates visual balance between historic detail and modern proportions.

Clean the glass panels using a soft microfiber cloth and a mild glass cleaner applied directly to the cloth rather than the frame. Dust metalwork gently with a dry brush, avoiding abrasive polishes or chemical solvents that could remove original gilding or lacquer.
