Antique Pair 19th Century Regency Mahogany Inlaid Astragal Glazed Library Bookcases

19th century
Description

A superb and highly decorative pair of antique Regency mahogany inlaid bookcases of exceptional quality and elegant proportion. These refined English cabinets feature beautifully figured mahogany throughout, enriched with delicate satinwood stringing and striking classical urn inlaid panels to the lower doors.

The upper sections are fitted with astragal glazed doors, the elegant Gothic arch glazing bars giving a light architectural feel while allowing the interior to be displayed. Inside are adjustable shelves, originally intended for the display of books, fine porcelain and decorative objects.

Below, each piece features a single drawer above a cupboard, providing both practical storage and clean classical lines. This arrangement was typical of the period, offering a discreet place for smaller items above larger enclosed storage below, ideal for use in a gentleman’s library or drawing room.

The inlaid oval panels depicting classical urns are particularly fine, inspired by neoclassical design of the period and reflecting the influence of Hepplewhite and Sheraton. The crisp brass handles, elegant moulded cornices and shaped bracket feet complete the look.

Condition Report:

Excellent antique condition with a rich mellow colour and attractive patina. Minor age-related marks, light surface wear and some wear to the glazing as expected. Overall a very well-preserved and highly presentable pair.

A rare opportunity to acquire a true pair of elegant Regency bookcases combining display and storage, perfectly suited to both classic and contemporary interiors.

This pair of 19th-century Regency bookcases consists of two matching cabinets executed in warm brown figured mahogany with satinwood stringing and brass hardware. Each piece stands 242 cm high, 68.5 cm wide, and 58.5 cm deep, rising on shaped bracket feet beneath a dentil cornice. The upper sections display glass doors with Gothic arch astragal glazing bars enclosing adjustable shelves, while single drawers with circular brass pulls sit above lower cupboard doors decorated with classical urn marquetry inalys. Minor age-related marks, light surface wear, and mellow timber patination are visible across the surfaces. Designed for display and storage, the units suit placement in a gentleman's library, study, or drawing room to hold books, fine porcelain, or decorative objects. The combination of glazed upper compartments and enclosed lower cupboards provides both open visibility and concealed organization. The neoclassical ornamentation, crisp brass pull handles, and delicate inlay work reflect the formal styling of the period, fitting seamlessly into both traditional and modern residential spaces.

Regency bookcases typically feature classical proportions, mahogany timber, astragal glazed doors with geometric or arched glazing bars, and classical marquetry motifs such as urns, swags, or lyres.

Craftsmen primarily utilised dense mahogany, incorporating boxwood, satinwood, or ebony inlays, hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, and mouth-blown float glass panels within thin wooden glazing bars.

Authentic pieces display hand-drawn glass with slight imperfections, hand-carved dovetail joinery, hand-planed backboards, and natural age patina on the brass fittings and interior timbers.

Positioning a matching pair flank-by-flank in an entryway or alcove provides architectural symmetry, while styling the interior shelves with contemporary ceramics alongside books bridges historical craftsmanship with modern aesthetics.

Dust gently with a soft microfibre cloth, apply a beeswax polish twice yearly to protect the timber, avoid direct sunlight to prevent veneer fading, and maintain constant humidity to avoid timber cracking.
