This late 19th-century French Empire style bookcase takes the form of a large ebonised timber cabinet with three arched glazed doors over solid panelled cupboard doors below, fitted with light oak shelves inside. Gilt bronze ormolu mounts adorn the frieze, uprights, and lower panels, featuring laurel wreath and anthemion motifs alongside classical figurative appliques. The mahogany structure receives a deep black ebonised finish, complemented by the warm honey tones of the timber backboards and shelves. Locks stamped 'Mon Krieger, Paris' mark the piece to the noted Parisian cabinet-making firm. Practical for use in a grand study, library, or principal reception room, the cabinet provides generous display and storage space for books and collections. Standing at a substantial scale, it accommodates extensive library arrangements across multiple tiers behind glass. The construction allows for complete flat packing, making it adaptable for placement in various room layouts within a home.

Originating in early 19th-century France, Empire style furniture features Neoclassical symmetry, dark or ebonised woods, classical architectural proportions, and ornamental gilt bronze mounts inspired by Greco-Roman iconography.

Late 19th-century ebonised cabinets typically incorporate hardwood frames finished with dark lacquer or ebonised stain, glass door panels, solid oak or pine internal shelving, and cast gilt-bronze or brass ormolu mounts.

Authentic pieces display hand-fitted joinery, original gilded bronze mounts fixed with period threaded screws, hand-cut timber backing panels, and wear to the ebonised finish along functional contact points.

An ebonised bookcase serves as a structural focal point in modern interiors, pairing effectively against neutral plastered walls, minimalist brass lighting, and contemporary ceramics to highlight its dark silhouette.

Maintain ebonised surfaces by dusting with a soft microfibre cloth and applying specialized furniture wax sparingly, avoiding ammonia-based glass cleaners or chemical polishes that degrade original lacquers.
