Dating from circa 1870, this Victorian Aesthetic Movement storage cabinet by H Ogden of Manchester is made from solid walnut in a warm brown colour. The three-tier construction comprises a graduated lower chest of drawers with two upper tiers, panelled cupboard doors, and geometric diamond wood inlays accompanied by ebony details. Additional visible elements include original brass drop handles, moulded cornices, and minor age-related marks with a small amount of missing inlay. The piece measures 194 cm high, 108 cm wide, and 52 cm deep, and breaks down into three separate sections for transport. Position this substantial storage cabinet in a living room, hallway, or study to serve as a practical organizational unit with period character. Its upright proportions provide ample shelving and drawer space while occupying a modest footprint on the floor. The rich timber grain and linear marquetry integrate easily into traditional or eclectic interior schemes seeking authentic nineteenth-century furniture.

FAQs

Originating in the late nineteenth century, Aesthetic Movement furniture emphasizes artistic form, reform of design principles, and stylized decoration. Pieces often feature simple linear profiles, geometric wood inlay, panels, and understated brass metalwork rather than heavy classical carving.

These pieces are predominantly constructed from solid hardwoods such as oak, mahogany, or ebonised wood. Decorative elements often incorporate contrasting timber marquetry, panelled door fronts, and cast brass drop handles.

Authentic items display hallmarks of late Victorian cabinetmaking, including hand-dovetailed drawer joints, stamped makers marks or brass plates from established workshops, geometric wood marquetry, and period-appropriate brass hardware.

Large storage cabinets serve as functional focal points in dining rooms, living areas, or hallways. Their warm timber tones pair well with neutral plaster walls, muted linen textiles, and contemporary sculptural ceramics.

Keep the wood away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent drying or veneer lifting. Clean surfaces regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish periodically along the grain to preserve the finish.
