Antique Art Deco Oak Glazed Bookcase | Carved Arched Top

1920 - 1940
For Sale by ActFurniture LTD
Description

Antique 1930s Art Deco glazed bookcase in oak, a tall and well-proportioned piece of good quality, showcasing fine craftsmanship and handsome figured timber.

A pair of glazed doors with geometric glazing bars over fielded lower panels opens to an interior with adjustable shelves, ideal for books, china or collections, with a lock to the doors.

The arched top is carved with stylised Art Deco fan motifs to the corners over a beaded frieze, with stepped Deco mouldings to the upper corners, and the bookcase stands on a plinth base with reeded corner blocks.

The oak displays an attractive quarter-sawn grain with lovely medullary ray figure, and a warm, rich colour with a mellow patina.

Presented in good condition commensurate with age. A very desirable Art Deco oak bookcase of slim proportions, a perfect addition to any study, living room, dining room or hallway.

FAQs

Art Deco glazed bookcases from this era feature geometric forms, clean vertical lines, and stylized decorative accents such as carved friezes or stepped pediments. They typically combine enclosed wooden bases with paned glass doors designed for displaying literature and decorative objects.

These bookcases were predominantly constructed using solid oak, walnut, or mahogany, often enhanced with timber veneers. Traditional joinery techniques, such as mortise and tenon joints and hand-fitted glazing bars, were standard practice during this manufacturing period.

Authentic pieces feature period-appropriate geometric carved motifs, original hand-cut glass panes, and solid oak drawer linings or backing boards. Original brass or steel lock mechanisms and consistent age-related wear on contact points also assist in authentication.

Place the unit against a neutral wall to allow the dark oak grain and geometric glass framework to serve as a visual anchor. Balance the dark timber by styling the interior shelves with a mixture of bound books, neutral ceramics, and minimalist glass items.

Clean the timber surfaces using a soft cloth and apply a quality beeswax polish periodically to preserve the finish and nourish the oak. Avoid harsh chemicals on the glass to protect adjacent wood finishes, and keep the piece away from direct heat sources to prevent timber shrinkage.
