A decorative Japanese table lamp from 1910, styled after the Meiji period and formed as a bronze urn on a wooden base. The dark bronze body is decorated in the champlevé technique with inlaid polychrome enamel showing floral patterns in red, blue, and green, complemented by twin handles shaped as stylistic animals, a patterned collar molding, and an original old patinated finish. The lamp carries a cream-coloured, pleated fabric shade tapering towards the top. Total height is 56 cm, with a base diameter of 16 cm and a vase height of 33 cm. Suitable for placement on a sideboard top or a gentleman's library desk to provide warm ambient illumination.

Japanese champleve enamel lighting refers to table lamps constructed from bronze or brass vessels decorated using the champleve technique, where recessed designs carved into the metal are filled with vitreous enamel paste and fired. Many of these pieces originate from the Meiji period (18681912) and were exported or later converted from vases into electric lighting during the early twentieth century.

These lamps are constructed primarily from cast bronze or brass, featuring incised or cast cell patterns filled with colourful opaque enamel. The handles and bases are typically integral metal castings, and the electrical fittings and shades are mounted onto the central vessel core.

Authentic Meiji period pieces display heavy cast bronze construction, hand-finished enamel fills flush with the metal surface, and natural age-related oxidisation on un-enamelled areas. Look for traditional cast handles, cast maker seals or signatures near the base, and evidence of historical adaptions for wiring.

Place the lamp on a neutral sideboard, desk, or console table to allow the dark patinated bronze and polychrome enamel colours to serve as a focal point. Pair it with structured contemporary or pleated shades to balance traditional metalwork with modern lighting requirements.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners or abrasive polishes that could scratch the enamel or strip the natural bronze patina. Ensure all electrical wiring is inspected by a qualified electrician prior to use.
