This antique three-piece silver cruet set from 1930 reflects the George III style and consists of a sterling silver pepper shaker, open salt dish, and a mustard pot complete with a blue glass liner, spoon, and hallmarks for Chester, 1931 by makers Jay & Richard Attenborough. Each piece displays a polished silver colour, baluster bodies, scalloped rims, shell-adorned feet, flame finials, and minor surface marks reflecting its age and use. The tallest piece measures 9 cm in height, while individual items range up to 9 cm wide. Ideal for everyday dining or formal occasions, this traditional set sits comfortably on a sideboard top or dining table in an English Country House setting to hold condiments. The arrangement provides a practical way to serve salt, pepper, and mustard during family meals or dinner parties.

Cruet sets emerged as formal dining accessories designed to hold essential condiments such as salt, pepper, mustard, and oil at the table. During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, silver cruets became standard elements of formal dining service, reflecting refined table etiquette and host status.

Cruet sets were typically manufactured from solid sterling silver or silver plate over copper or base metal alloys. Glass or cobalt blue liners were frequently inserted into open salts and mustard pots to prevent chemical reactions between acids or salts and the metal.

Authenticity is verified through maker marks, town marks, date letters, and purity hallmarks stamped onto the metal surfaces. Structural signs such as hand-chased ornamentation, soldered joins, and correct historical foot styles like pad or shell feet indicate genuine period manufacture.

A silver cruet set can be styled as a table centrepiece during dining services or arranged on a sideboard tray alongside other hollowware. The reflective metallic surface adds subtle visual texture to contemporary dining rooms or traditional sideboards.

Silver pieces require gentle cleaning with specialist silver polish and soft cotton cloths to remove surface oxidisation. Avoid abrasive chemicals or automated dishwashers, and ensure salt and mustard residues are removed promptly to prevent pitting of the metal.
