A Victorian novelty silver salt tub takes the sculptural form of a boat, representing a Viking ship with detailed decorations on the bow and stern. This piece consists of sterling silver with a polished finish in silver on the exterior and a gilded gold interior surface. The exterior side bears stamped hallmarks near the base. The design includes a raised, curved stern post and a lower curled bow. Measuring 6.7 cm high, 8 cm wide, and 3 cm deep, this item functions as a tabletop salt cellar. Placed on a sideboard top, the salt tub serves as a decorative tableware item in a dining room or living space today, continuing its original function of holding salt for meals while displaying period Victorian craftsmanship.

A Victorian novelty silver salt cellar is a small tabletop container created during the nineteenth century in imaginative, non-traditional forms, such as boats, animals, or figurines, designed to hold loose salt for dining.

These pieces were primarily crafted from sterling silver, with many incorporating a thin layer of gold gilding on the interior surface to prevent the silver from reacting with and being corroded by the salt.

Authenticity is confirmed by inspecting the stamped British hallmarks, which typically include the lion passant for sterling quality, an assay office symbol, a specific date letter, and the makers initials.

Smaller novelty items can be incorporated into modern settings as functional table accessories, displayed within a curio cabinet, or placed on a bedroom dressing table to hold small items of jewellery.

Empty salt contents immediately after use and wash with warm water and mild liquid soap. Dry thoroughly with a lint-free cloth and polish the silver exterior gently while avoiding aggressive rubbing on the delicate gilt lining.
