This pair of Edwardian open salt cellars originates from Birmingham in 1903, created by silversmith William Devenport. The pieces consist of sterling silver with a bright silver exterior and a contrasting warm gold finish inside their gilt interiors. Each rectangular salt cellar stands on a dark, patinated base with vertical fluting, rounded corners, and a decorative gadrooned rim that frames the polished top edge. The interior features radiating fluted panels that catch the light, while the lower body shows natural darker toning from age. Measuring 2 cm high by 5 cm wide and 6.5 cm long, these small silver vessels sit comfortably on a dining table or sideboard. They suit use as traditional open salt cellars during formal meals, or as decorative table accents within an English Country House interior. Collectors of antique silver will find them a practical addition to a dining display, bringing period character to any table setting.

Open salt cellars are small vessels designed to hold loose salt at individual place settings on a dining table prior to the widespread adoption of free-flowing salt shakers.

Salt is highly corrosive to sterling silver, so silversmiths applied a thin layer of gold gilding to line the interior and protect the metal from oxidisation.

Authentic British pieces bear official hallmark impressions indicating the makers initials, town mark, standard mark such as the lion passant for sterling silver, and a date letter.

These small vessels can be placed on a dining table to hold gourmet salts, arranged on a sideboard as decorative accents, or repurposed as small trinket dishes on a dressing table.

Rinse out salt after use to prevent corrosion, polish the exterior gently with a soft cotton cloth and silver cleaner, and avoid harsh abrasive polishes on the gilding.
