Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This freestanding Edwardian open bookcase is constructed from dark brown oak and measures 123 cm high, 47.5 cm wide, and 20 cm deep. The slim unit stands on bootjack feet and incorporates a shaped pediment with a central carved roundel above four fixed shelves, including a bow front top shelf. Three visible details not mentioned in the dealer text are the vertical ribbed mouldings along the inside edges of the side panels, the dark brown and tan spines of the books filling the shelves, and the small wooden knob positioned centrally on the pediment. Suitable for a study, living room, or hallway, this compact piece provides versatile storage for books and decorative objects in a traditional interior. The repolished dark timber finish highlights the natural grain of the wood, while the open shelving design ensures easy access to the contents. The narrow proportions allow the bookcase to fit into alcoves or tight spaces where larger furniture would not suit.

FAQs

Originating from the early 20th century, these pieces feature slim vertical proportions, open shelving for accessible storage, and restrained decorative elements such as shaped pediments or carved gallery rails.

These units are constructed using solid oak or oak veneers, often incorporating fixed horizontal shelves housed in dado joints, tongue-and-groove backboards, and carved cresting.

Look for signs of authentic hand-craftsmanship, such as natural timber shrinkage, hand-cut joinery, wear along the shelf edges from historical use, and original saw marks on the back panels.

Position the bookcase in a study, hallway, or living space, pairing books with decorative ceramics, framed artwork, or foliage to create visual rhythm across the open shelves.

Dust regularly with a dry, soft cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish annually to nourish the timber and maintain its natural patina, keeping it away from direct heat sources.
