This Villeroy & Boch Delft and ormolu wall sconce dates from the 1890 period in a Rococo Revival style. Constructed from blue-and-white glazed porcelain and gilt bronze, the piece displays vibrant cobalt blue transfer-printed decoration against a white ground alongside metallic gold elements on the hardware. The upper arched cartouche shows an Italianate villa with sweeping outdoor steps, a fountain, a harbour with ships, and two cloaked figures, while the lower cartouche depicts playful putti in a pastoral scene. Elaborate Rococo scrollwork mouldings and scrolling foliate motifs accent the ceramic body, complemented by two detachable ormolu candle arms featuring cast holders shaped to resemble melted wax. The entire assembly measures 49.5 cm high, 33 cm wide, and 15 cm deep including the candle arms. Suitable for installation on a narrow wall space in a dining room, hallway, or living area, it holds tapered candles to provide ambient lighting.

During the late nineteenth century, major European manufacturers like Villeroy & Boch produced high-quality ceramics inspired by traditional seventeenth-century Dutch Delftware. These revival pieces featured classic cobalt blue monochrome painting depicting landscapes, maritime scenes, and cherubs, often incorporated into elaborate Rococo forms.

Antique ormolu sconces typically combine glazed earthenware or porcelain backplates with cast metal arms made from bronze or brass finished with a gold-amalgam plating technique known as ormolu, which creates a durable gilded surface.

Authentic pieces from this period usually bear impressed or printed maker marks on the reverse, such as the Villeroy & Boch Mettlach castle mark or factory initials, alongside specific form numbers and hand-painted painter marks.

A ceramic sconce can be hung as a accent piece in a hallway, dining space, or bedroom. Pairing blue and white ceramics with neutral walls or dark timber creates visual contrast while bridging traditional and contemporary aesthetics.

Dust the ceramic and metal components regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth. Avoid using liquid cleaners, abrasive chemicals, or water on metal components to prevent tarnishing or degradation of the gilded ormolu finish.
