Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This nineteenth-century Anglo-Indian colonial chest is constructed from dark brown hardwood and ornamented with brass fittings. The piece measures 55 cm high, 95 cm wide, and 42 cm deep. The exterior displays detailed floral and foliate carving on the front panels, complemented by pierced brass plates, studded brass details, and side carrying handles. A rising lid opens to reveal an interior fitted with a candle box, while the base features two drawers resting on a plinth. In a contemporary home, this chest suits a gentleman's library or study, functioning well as a storage piece or a decorative accent in a living space. The construction incorporates geometric carved details and visible brass mountings, offering traditional storage design suited to period or eclectic interiors.

FAQs

A Zanzibar chest, historically produced along the Swahili Coast and Indian Ocean trade routes, is a heavy hardwood storage trunk decorated with ornate brass plates, studs, and intricately carved panels.

These chests were traditionally crafted from dense tropical hardwoods such as teak, mahogany, or rosewood, adorned with pierced brass mountings, sheet metal, and hand-forged brass studs.

Authentic 19th-century examples display hand-cut brass fittings, decorative pierced brass mounts, hand-carved foliate front motifs, and dense hardwood construction often secured with original brass studs.

Position the chest as a statement coffee table in a living area or place it at the foot of a bed to add rich texture, historical character, and functional storage.

Dust the wood regularly with a dry microfibre cloth, apply a high-quality beeswax polish sparingly to the timber, and avoid harsh chemical cleaners on the decorative brass fittings to preserve the aged patina.
