Antique Jacobean Style Oak Display Cabinet | Leaded Glass Doors

1900 - 1920
For Sale by ActFurniture LTD
Description

Antique 20th century glazed display cabinet in oak, a handsome and characterful piece of good quality, typical of the fine Jacobean revival furniture of the 1920s and 1930s.

The cabinet is fitted with a pair of leaded glass doors with canted corners, each opening to an interior with shelves, ideal for books, china or collectables. The doors are finished with brass drop handles and pierced brass escutcheons, either side of a fixed central panel.

The central panel is decorated with a carved applied cartouche and turned bosses, with further bosses to the frieze, and the doors and base are edged with crisp rope-twist mouldings. It is topped by a raised back and stands on turned bun feet.

The oak displays a lovely figured grain with a warm, rich dark colour and an attractive patina.

Presented in good condition, a very desirable display cabinet or glazed bookcase, perfect for a dining room, sitting room or study.

This Jacobean revival display cabinet from the 1920s is constructed from dark brown oak, glass, lead, and brass. The dark timber displays a rich figured grain, complemented by a fixed central panel ornamented with a carved applied cartouche and turned wooden bosses. Twin leaded glass doors with canted corners feature brass drop handles and pierced brass escutcheons, opening to reveal internal shelving. Crisp rope-twist mouldings edge the doors and base, while turned bun feet support the structure below a raised frieze set with further carved bosses. The cabinet measures 121.5 cm wide, 33.5 cm deep, and 108.5 cm high. It provides storage for books, china, or collectables and suits placement in a dining room, sitting room, or study.

Jacobean Revival style emerged in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, drawing inspiration from 17th-century English woodwork. It is characterised by heavy oak construction, geometric wood mouldings, dark finishes, turned legs, and decorative leaded glass panels.

Traditional Jacobean style cabinets are constructed primarily from solid oak or oak veneers, incorporating leaded glass panes set within wooden frames. Accents typically include brass or iron teardrop handles and carved decorative bosses.

Jacobean Revival pieces exhibit solid oak construction, original lead caming on the glass panels, and evidence of carved or lathe-turned decorative elements. Key identifiers include dark, rich patination and period-appropriate joinery such as mortise and tenon joints.

Position the cabinet against light-coloured walls to create visual contrast and highlight the dark timber grain. Pair the piece with neutral ceramics, glassware, or structured art books to create a balance of traditional and contemporary elements.

Apply a high-quality beeswax polish along the grain of the oak once or twice a year to nourish the wood and protect the finish. Clean the leaded glass gently using a soft, dry microfiber cloth, avoiding moisture contact with the surrounding wood framework.
