This Victorian satin glass oil lamp shade dates to circa 1900. The piece is formed from satin glass in a graduating yellow to white colour tone, featuring a ruffled rim, an embossed air-trap pattern, and a brass mount over a double burner oil lamp base. The hardware includes two circular metal thumb wheels on the side of the burner, and a clear glass chimney emerges from the centre. It measures 15.2 cm high, 23.5 cm wide, and 23.5 cm deep. Suitable for interior display in a traditional home, this lamp shade sits well atop a sideboard top in a dining room or living space as a decorative antique lighting accent. The shade provides a soft, warm glow when lit, adding period character to a tabletop or mantelpiece arrangement.

Victorian satin glass shades feature a frosted, velvet-like surface finish created by treating blown glass with acid vapors. Often produced in graduated colour tones with decorative internal air-trap patterns, these shades were popular lighting accessories during the late nineteenth century.

Satin glass was manufactured by blowing two or more layers of glass together, frequently using patterned molds to trap air pockets between the layers. The outer surface was subsequently exposed to hydrofluoric acid vapor to achieve its characteristic matte texture.

Original Victorian satin glass shades typically feature pontil marks, sharply defined hand-shaped ruffles, and a uniform silk-like tactile surface rather than a painted coating. The glass often exhibits distinct internal air traps and smooth colour transitions.

A Victorian satin glass shade can be fitted onto a sympathetic table lamp base on a console or side table to serve as a warm accent lighting piece. Its textured glow provides soft illumination and structural contrast alongside clean contemporary furnishings.

Satin glass should be cleaned using warm water with mild soap and a soft cloth, avoiding abrasive pads or harsh chemical sprays that could alter the acid-etched finish. Allow the glass to cool completely before washing to prevent thermal shock fractures.
