C19th Sevres Style Porcelain Decanter Set.

19th century
Description

This elaborate late nineteenth-century Sèvres-style decanting casket combines richly gilt bronze mountings with vivid sky-blue porcelain panels and a complete glass service. The rectangular, casket-like case stands on four rounded feet, its hinged lid opening to reveal a white-lined interior fitted with ribbed decanters and matching stemmed glasses. Finely chased gilt ornament frames the panels, with beaded borders, scrolling foliage and sculptural corner mounts. The porcelain plaques are delicately painted with classical figures among clouds, alongside a floral spray, softly rendered against the luminous blue ground. A glass shelf displays the vessels securely, while the decorated exterior transforms practical storage into a sumptuous salon display piece. Its opulent palette and mythological imagery evoke the taste for French courtly luxury.

This nineteenth-century Napoleon III decanter set takes the form of an ormolu-mounted porcelain casket finished in gold and light blue. The rectangular box stands on four rounded feet with a hinged lid, containing a complete glass service of ribbed decanters and matching stemmed glasses resting on a glass shelf. Finely chased gilt ornament frames the plaques, showing beaded borders, scrolling foliage and sculptural corner mounts, while the light blue porcelain panels display painted cherub vignettes and floral motifs. The piece measures 32 cm high, 40 cm wide, and 31 cm deep. Positioned on a sideboard top in a living room or formal dining space, the set serves as a functional drinks cabinet and decorative centrepiece. The gilt glass decanters and matching glasses sit securely inside the white-lined interior behind glass sides, protected by the ornate framework of the casket. The combination of bright blue ground porcelain, clear glass vessels and polished metallic mounts creates a striking display object suitable for contemporary entertaining.

A cave a liqueur, also known as a liqueur set or decanter box, originated in 18th and 19th century France as a decorative chest designed to store and display spirit decanters and matching glassware.

These sets were typically constructed from gilded bronze or brass mounts, fitted with hand-painted porcelain plaques or tortoiseshell inlays, and housed cut glass decanters and glasses with gilt detailing.

Authentic Sevres-style panels feature distinct ground colours such as bleu celeste, hand-painted vignettes depicting cherubs or floral scenes, and detailed gilding, often accompanied by factory marks.

Place the open box on a sideboard, bar cart, or console table to showcase the glassware interior, adding a classic focal point to modern entertaining areas.

Dust the gilded bronze mounts with a soft, dry brush without using abrasive chemical polishes, and hand-wash glass decanters using warm water and mild soap to protect any gilt decoration.
