Antique 18th Century Glass Dry Mustard Jar C.1790

18th century
Description

A beautiful and uncommon 18th century glass mustard jar with original lid, circa 1790. Many of these you see are missing their lids, this example being complete makes it rare. It has a lovely shape.

These jars reflected the growing popularity of mustard as a condiment in 18th century British dining and the period’s increasing emphasis on refined table settings. Mustard was widely consumed in dry powder form and mixed with water or vinegar before serving.

Condition is good, commensurate with age and use. There is a little wear to the base as you would expect and the lid either has a small chip to the top or it is from the original making process, it’s difficult to tell. Either way, it doesn’t detract from this beautiful piece.

This eighteenth-century Georgian dry mustard jar is fashioned from clear hand-blown lead glass, complete with its original removable pointed stopper. The vessel rests upon a circular footed pedestal base, while the body displays vertical fluting and the stopper features a vertically ribbed finial. Visible details include wear to the base and a minor imperfection at the top of the lid. The object measures 16 cm high by 6 cm wide. Placed on a sideboard top, the jar suits an English Country House interior scheme as a decorative table accessory. It reflects the eighteenth-century dining trend for refined tableware when mustard was stored in dry powder form prior to mixing with water or vinegar.

During the 18th century, mustard was frequently stored and sold as a dry, finely ground powder rather than a prepared paste. Specialised glass jars with tight-fitting stoppers were created for the dining table to keep the dry mustard powder free from moisture before preparation.

Late Georgian glassware was typically hand-blown using lead glass mixtures, which provided high clarity and weight. Craftspeople shaped the body and stopper manually, often using moulds or tools to apply vertical fluting and ground joints to fit stoppers tightly.

Authentic period glassware often features a pontil mark or ground pontil scar on the base, slight asymmetry from hand-blowing, small enclosed air bubbles (seeds), and a greyish or dark tint under ultraviolet light due to historic raw material compositions.

Small antique glass vessels function well when grouped with other clear or tinted glass pieces on a tray, displayed on open kitchen shelving, or positioned on a sideboard to catch natural light.

Antique glass should be washed by hand using lukewarm water and mild detergent, avoiding sudden temperature changes that can cause thermal shock and cracking. Never place historic glass vessels in a dishwasher.
