This Edwardian bar brooch originates from circa 1915 and demonstrates a three-stone arrangement with a central emerald-cut emerald flanked by two round Old European cut diamonds. The piece is cast from 18ct white gold with a platinum setting, displaying a silver and green colour palette along a slender horizontal metal bar secured by a hinged pin and clasp fastening. Clear hallmarks appear on the side of the bar, comprising a platinum fineness mark and an 18ct fineness mark, while the reverse reveals a pin mechanism alongside a safety clasp. Measuring 6.4 cm deep, this item functions as personal jewellery for wear on clothing during formal occasions or celebrations.

Bar brooches became prominent during the late Victorian and Edwardian eras, remaining popular through the 1920s. Designed with a clean horizontal profile, they were created to fasten lightweight fabrics, scarves, and lapels, shifting fine jewellery toward sleeker, tailored forms.

Brooches from the 1910s typically feature platinum or 18ct white gold settings to highlight the brightness of diamonds and coloured gemstones. Mountings were executed by hand using delicate claw or bezel settings along a slender metal bar, secured with a traditional pin and catch mechanism.

Authentic pieces from circa 1915 display hand-cut gemstones, such as old European cut diamonds or step-cut emeralds, set in precious white metals. Look for period makers marks, metal purity hallmarks, and hand-finished millegrain or claw details along the settings.

A bar brooch can be pinned horizontally across the lapel of a tailored blazer, fastened at the collar of a button-down shirt, or used to secure a silk scarf. It also functions as a decorative accent on knitwear or along the waistline of a modern evening dress.

Emeralds require gentle care as they are susceptible to damage from harsh chemicals and temperature changes. Clean the brooch using a soft, dry cloth or mild soapy warm water with a soft toothbrush, avoiding ultrasonic cleaners and steam treatment.
