Set of 4 Victorian Silver Shell Salts

19th century
Description

A lovely set of 4 antique Sterling Silver salt dishes with spoons. They are stylish and good quality, shaped as shells set on three small ball feet with gilt linings to prevent wear or corrosion from the salt. They come with 4 silver spoons, which aren't original to the set, but display well.

Each dish is hallmarked for Birmingham, 1897, E.S.Jones and the spoons are hallmarked for Sheffield, 1959, Fry & Wigfield. The total weight is approximately 56g in total.

Everything is in good condition apart from one small pinprick hole in a salt dish (see photo). There are of course some faint surface marks and a few minor signs of age and use but nothing detrimental and they have been lightly cleaned and polished.

The set comes in its original fitted box, lined with velvet and silk with sections for each dish to sit in and sections to hold the spoons. The box is in good condition with some minor wear around the edges and a few old scuffs but overall it displays well.

Approximate Measurements :

Width of Salt : 2" / 5cm

Box : 6" / 15cm x 5 1/2" / 14cm

The best description comes from the photos so please look at them all carefully and if you have any questions just ask.

This Victorian set comprises four sterling silver salt dishes shaped as fluted shells with gilded interior bowls, raised on three small cast ball feet. Two matching silver spoons accompany the dishes inside the original fitted box. The exterior case features a dark finish with a small metal latch, while the interior lid is lined in gathered magenta silk and the base holds a dark velvet insert moulded with shaped compartments for each piece. The salt dishes bear Birmingham hallmarks for 1897 by E.S.Jones, and the spoons display Sheffield hallmarks for 1959 by Fry & Wigfield. The presentation box measures 15 cm high by 14 cm wide, and the salt dishes measure 5 cm in width. Display this cased set on a sideboard top in a traditional dining room or living area as part of an English Country House interior scheme. The pieces provide a decorative accent for display or collection, bringing period silver and a structured velvet-lined presentation box into a domestic space.

Salt cellars, or open salts, are small vessels crafted to hold table salt before the commercial introduction of free-flowing anti-caking salt shakers in the early twentieth century. During the Victorian era, silver shell-form designs featuring gilded interiors were widely produced as formal dining table accessories.

Antique salt cellars were predominantly crafted from sterling silver or silver gilt, often featuring interior gold wash or gilding to prevent the sodium chloride in table salt from corroding the metal. Fitted presentation sets were typically housed in wood-framed cases lined with velvet and silk.

Authentic Victorian pieces feature official hallmark stamps indicating the silversmith mark, silver purity standard, assay office mark, and date letter. Structural hallmarks include crisp hand-fluted shell forms, cast ball feet, and original fitted presentation boxes with velvet recesses.

These small vessels can be integrated into contemporary dining table settings for formal entertaining or repurposed as decorative accent dishes on a dressing table or sideboard to hold small items of jewellery.

Silver salt cellars should be rinsed and dried thoroughly immediately after use to prevent salt residue from causing pitting or oxidisation. Clean the silver surfaces gently with a soft polishing cloth and store the set in its original fabric-lined case away from damp conditions.
