FAQs

Mustard pots constructed from sterling silver became prominent components of dining services in eighteenth-century Britain. They were specifically created to house prepared mustard paste at table settings, frequently featuring removable glass liners to protect the metal from chemical reactions with acidic ingredients.

Traditional mustard pots are constructed from sterling silver, Sheffield plate, or silver plate, and often include a hand-blown glass or porcelain interior liner. Accessories typically include a small silver spoon shaped specifically for scooping mustard.

Authentic British pieces carry hallmark stampings denoting the maker, city assay office, standard purity (such as the lion passant for sterling silver), and a date letter signifying the year of manufacture.

A silver mustard pot can be styled as a accent piece on a sideboard top, curated within a glazed cabinet display, or retained for functional service during formal dining.

Silverware should be cleaned using a soft cloth and a specialized non-abrasive silver polish to remove tarnish without scratching the surface. Storage in anti-tarnish cloth pouches helps minimize oxidisation over extended periods.
